A virus spread by close personal contact, such as kissing or sexual intercourse. There are two types of herpes. The first type is herpes simplex type 1 (or HSV-1). HSV-1 occurs most often on or near the mouth and appears as a blister or cold sore. 	Herpes is the term that is generally used to describe a sexually transmitted disease that is carried by a double-stranded DNA virus, the herpes simplex virus type 1 and type 2. This virus can cause both oral and genital herpes. When viewed on a microscope, these two viruses look identical. The type 1 virus commonly occurs above the waist while the type 2 virus is
below the waist. Oral herpes appear as cold sores while genital herpes appear as genital sores. This virus has affected a very large population in America . It is reported that 80 million people have it in America . This equates to 1 in5 adults in the US .

Genital Herpes

There are eight types of human herpes viruses and all have the skill to be inside the body without showing symptoms. Genital herpes is usually caused by the type 2 virus (HSV-2) - often when a person gets infected with the virus, there is minimal or even no symptoms at all

Those who exhibit symptoms typically have blisters on or around the rectum and genital area. These blisters usually break and create tender ulcers which can take 2 to 4 weeks to cure the first time it occurs. .

A second outbreak can occur a week or months following the first, but this is less serious and the span is shorter than the first. The infection will stay in the body of the person forever but the number of times it can recur will also decrease over the years.

Genital herpes is an infection which is more common amongst women (one of four) compared to men (one of five). This is due to a male to female mode of transmission.

Herpes can originate from the sores caused by the virus, but it may also come from skin outbreaks that do not appear broken or having a sore. The virus can be transmitted from an infected person who has no visible sores and who does not even know that they are infected.
